Ritual

What is a ritual?

A ritual is considered as "a particular type of tradition that many folklorists study as a distinct category of folklore"(Sims and Stephens, 99). They are considered to be more organized and have a purpose than customs. Rituals are "usually repeated patterned frequently". It is overall a habitual action and it is not only limited to festivals such as the Bon Festival. It can be a daily event such as having dinner at the dinner table.
The ritual of the bon festival is that every year, lanterns are hung to guide the dead. There is a summer festival where the bon dance is done. It is overall repeated year after year although the dates can be different depending on the year.
